Kriya Yoga

THE CONCEPT OF KRIYA YOGA

by Yogacharya Shri Samir Mohan Chakravarty

Kriya Yoga is not merely a practice of Guru Pranam, Mahamudra, Meditation and Jyotimudra. It is a state of life, a lifestyle.

Kriya Yoga does not require merely physical, mental and spiritual activities; it is holistic in nature involving the entire being of the Kriyayogi. If one wants to obtain butter from milk, one has to do the process of churning. Similarly, in order to obtain the fruits of Kriyayoga, the practitioner must undergo the process of attitudinal change by subjecting himself to discipline in all spheres of his life.

Kriya Yoga begins with awareness – awareness of breathing, awareness of the body, awareness of the mind and awareness of emotions. Through the awareness of breathing one gains control over one’s mind and establishes an emotional balance in his responses to the outside stimuli.

Our bodies consume food and whatever toxin is generated in the body gets eliminated through stool, urine and if necessary by vomiting. The mind also consumes but it cannot eliminate the toxins like anger, hatred, ego etc. These get embedded first in the subconscious mind and then it passes into the unconscious mind where it forms the root of many psycho-somatic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcer etc.

It is only through awareness that we can prevent the formation of toxins in the mind. Kriya Yoga meditation relaxes the body and the mind. This prolonged relaxation helps the toxins embedded in the unconscious mind to come up into the conscious mind where due to awareness we can detect them and deal with them properly.

These toxins can finally be eliminated from the mind through love and selfless service to others. Selfless service may take the form of gift of love and affection, gift of money, gift of labour, gift of knowledge etc.

Thus Kriya Yoga begins with awareness and ends with application. In this process we discover our true nature (Sat); we become aware of our bodies, minds and emotions (Chit) and ultimately we earn fulfillment, peace and bliss (Ananda).
